When I was a kid, I’d spend my free time reading in my closet, locked away from the noise of the world. As I grew and became capable of running a computer, Google Earth was my best friend. So much knowledge at my fingertips, able to scroll a couple times and place myself in 360-views of ancient structures or bustling cities. Determined to see things beyond the screen, I set a plan in place: The Star Jar.

Globs of purple and blue paint coated the inside of an old glass jar, so thick that it took a week to dry. Specks of white flung across the canvas I once thought resemble the night sky. Although my artistic instinct is slim to none, the theme stood that in this life, I wanted to do amazing things. ‘Shoot for the stars’, they said. So I painted a star-speckled jar, tore pages from my journal, and wrote my bucket list goals inside.

Years later, none of these plans would be accomplished. Even simple, local attractions stood unvisited. Amid a mental health crisis, I gave up on everything. Through events too exhausting to explain online, I decided to regain my spark. Nobody was coming to save me, like those fairytales I’d tucked myself in my closet to binge. Change was going to come from within, and nobody would force me except myself.

At the age of 22, I bring to you The Star Jar. An attempt to reclaim the childhood spark that led me to paint that glass jar in the first place. Even if it’ll take years, I will dedicate myself to accomplishing what Cloey from a decade ago would’ve wanted. All my life, I’ve desired a life of travel and writing. Join me in my very best attempt to do just that, as well as provide additional posts about non-Star Jar, but still very entertaining and worthwhile adventures.

Welcome to the blog. Happy to have you here.

Very best,

Cloey Kinney

Cloey Kinney first began writing at the age of 12. Although the unofficial process had been since birth. Even on her first day of middle school, she was tucked away on a swing set with a notepad, uninterested in the other kids.

First published with Write For a Better World Canada, Kinney placed top 10 across the country in her category. Following, were three publications in the Polar Expressions anthologies. Across various notepads and Google docs, Kinney estimates there are no less than ten novels roughly sketched from beginning to end, all waiting to come to fruition.

Outside of her creative writing, she first took interest in journalism after starting up her high school newspaper. Unfortunately, her journalism interest wasn't shared, and a worldwide pandemic derailed her attempts. Although short-lived, her motivation was recognized and granted her the opportunity to write for small businesses and journals across the county. Kinney is a firm believer that media coverage can be so focused on the negative, that they miss their chance to cherish the small things. As an independent writer, she aims to shine a light on the indie authors and artists, small businesses, and events going on.
